Bay Area Mayors Confess to Dubious Dining Decisions

  • December 9, 2020

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and San Francisco Mayor London Breed are both facing criticism for engaging in dining behavior they’ve warned their constituents against. KPIX reports that the day after Liccardo tweeted that people should cancel their Thanksgiving celebrations to slow the spread of COVID-19, he attended a five-household dinner. Meanwhile, the day after California Gov. Gavin Newsom attended his now-infamous French Laundry dinner, SF Mayor London Breed attended an eight-person party at the restaurant to celebrate socialite Gorretti Lo Lui’s 60th birthday, the SF Chronicle reports. Liccardo has apologized, but so far, Breed has not, with a spokesperson emphasizing that she has “dined at a number of restaurants when the coronavirus case rate was lower to support them financially.” Chron food critic Soleil Ho doesn’t seem to buy her financial support argument, if this scathing piece is any indication.
